Let me say,

I love Los Angeles. I don't care, if it's hell, if it's expensive, if it's the end of the world.

Sunday we went up in the Puente Hills and the rain had just passed and was just about to come again. I saw a three panorama that extended across two counties and out to sea. Downtown Los Angeles individuated; library tower, California Plaza, 777. And there was Signal Hill, The Palos Verdes Ridge and like a mirage beyond it all Catalina Island.

We didn't take any pictures and I'm glad. The memory will swell.

San Gabriel River Trail

Add to Memories Share
A couple weeks ago I went on a bizarre and unplanned trip up the San Gabriel River on my bike. Ended up riding for thirty odd miles up to Santa Fe Dam and back.

It had been requested by a certain someone that I once again maintain this electric extension of myself. The thing is happiness doesn't lend itself to reportage as well as misery.

So the bullet points...

*Moved out of Claremont
*Moved to Whittier
*Started a second job a block from my house

What is it about Whittier? Will its quaintness wear me out? Or will it just subdue with its calm. I sleep so well here, in a resounding sort of quiet that is utterly unexpected considering how densely populated the neighborhood is. A lot of times it seems like the dream of a place I wanted, but expected never to find. And then there are moments that might as well be dreams: I chased a coyote through a back alley on my bike, through an apartment courtyard and out onto Washington Ave. I walk from my house to the hills and come upon a crossroads where nettle rises to my chest. I see the ocean, downtown and the San Gabriels from a hilltop in one panorama. I ride my bike past industrial wastelands, a picnic, a rodeo, and then a the top of a dam; a renaissance fair. A freaking ren-fair.

But the most recent happenings are these:

Sam came out to Whittier yesterday and we walked around the neighborhood, got lunch at El Comedor; probably should have took him to Los Sanchez instead, to bask in the glory of their $2 beer and grease infused splendor. I think for the most part his impressions were somewhat vague.

We went to downtown to practice at the Smell with Mabson on bass. There was a show scheduled later that night and oddly people started showing up at 7:30, strange people I've never seen at the Smell before. We had to wrap up somewhat early so that an Australian band could soundcheck. I planned on returning for a set by Palms, but the night took a slightly different course.

We went with Mabson to see his new place in Koreatown and wandered around there. We enjoyed many of the signs in the neighborhood: "Hi Puppy!" "My Paw Paw" "Mega Sign." Walked to Little Caesar's where we could hear Halloween Swim Team practicing at House of Vermont. Multiple visits to Mabson's much heralded 7-11 and lots of feeling vaguely claustrophobic with all the people swarming around. Koreatown is crazy packed full of people, way more than Echo Park or pretty much any part of LA I've been to. The feeling is crowded. But we had fun, ate unhealthy, went back to the Smell realized Palms had played already. I drove back to Whittier. Peace.

All things rub me the wrong way today.

Landlord scheduled some company to clean vents in the house. This process includes loud noises and a substantial delay in my ability to accomplish things today. Things like vacuum cleaners, compressors and general white noise generators are like hell in my world, like a nasty smell that makes you nauseous. I need to get down to Walmart and get an eye exam, this is the last opportunity I'll have for three weeks.

Package orders
The post office
Buy gifts
Eye exam
Apply for new jobs
Practice for show tonight...

This show is the antidote?

Without Jamie around all the down time seems like a dull ache, a fog. And in a grandiose sweep the air around me has become like the feeling in my head. A clouded, aching headache derived of smokey air.

Everyone go to my record release show. At least the music is going really well. Good thing, because its taken the place of all other pleasures.

I have been enjoying a few classics of California art this week...

WEEKLY UPDATE 10/22/007

Add to Memories Share

1.  Questions about the availability of Girls of Meth tape
So I'm not too sure about the availability of the "Girls of Meth" tape.   There have been some financial woes at Unread that stem mainly from living in that Fishtown neighborhood in Philadelphia.  I spent like three hours there once and I got stuff thrown at me by whacked-out neighborhood kids, so my impression was that that area kind of sucks.  Anyhow, the note on the website says this: "Unread is currently out of order until new home found.  Am living in limbo.  New operations will occur soon. Please be patient all orders will be sent soon.  Sorry for confusion."  So I will let you know of any developments.  My best wishes to Chris.

2.  I'm playing a last minute show TOMORROW, Oct 23 in I.E. deep.  It's with the band Our Brother the Native from the Fat Cat label.  It's at Chaz Knapp's house located at 24743 Covey Rd., Moreno Valley.  That's right, Mo Val.  Also playing are Whitman and quite possibly No Paws (No Lions).  So I'm pretty jazzed.

3.  Also on the calendar this week is a house show in Long Beach at the Summer Vacation House.  Though in Long Beach, they still have things like land lines, they have other cool old fashioned things, like neighborhoods.  So Long Beach is always fun every time I play there.  This show includes Starburst Crystal Ensemble on their home turf, Right Hand Band, and Mycroft Holmes.  It is FREE, but please note the early start time: 6PM.

4.  The last relevant event this week I'd like to mention is for a good cause.  Helping a bro out, you know.  The final benefit for my friend Brian (Brizzahh) Perez is on Thursday at the Smell.  He's going in for his final surgery the day after that.  You get some good bands and a rare performance by FoodEater, which is Matt O'Neill – pretty much the mastermind behind Quem Quaeritis.  Knight Rider is no longer playing - in their place is a band featuring Kevin from Knight Rider and one of the ponies from Night Wounds.

5.   Next weekend I'm traveling.   I'm flying out to Utah.  I'm playing a show in Ogden, just because.  So if you know anyone who lives in Utah.  Tell them to go.  Its at Mojo's Caffe.  I have no idea what to expect.

6.  One of my musical heroes is playing my record release show; Mr. Charlie McAlister, newly ensconced in a habitation somewhere in LA metro.  Nov. 9 in Mid City at WOMEN.

7.  I finished a four song EP recently.  So if anyone wants to put that on 7", that'd be fly.  They are what I consider good 7" songs, pure pop catchiness, self-sufficient and short.  Together they clock in at 6:30.

8.  I played at Barnes and Nobles in Redlands this last week as part of Whitman.  You can see pictures here…

So I was hanging out in my front yard with Matt O'Neill and Chris Payne, playing objectionable songs on guitar when we saw the fire trucks scream up Mountain Ave.  Now there is a pall of grey haze over the valley because the Santa Anas are here again.  The sun looks like it does in an eclipse. Smoke is making my eyes burn a little.

If this weekend is any indication, going out to shows constantly, without fail is the thread that ties me to sanity.

Good thing I live here.

Weekly Update 10/15/07

Add to Memories Share

Lots happened this last week.

1.  The Girls of Meth tape is available for purchase through Unread Records.  You can purchase it here.

2.  Heart of Grime is all pressed up and it exists as a physical object, though its street date is not until Nov. 6.  Some good fellow mastered the record and made it sound LOUD.  I mean seriously, this record is LOUD.  I'm quite happy with the results. The things that are happening at this moment are these: CDs are being sent out to press and radio, I'm repackaging some copies into a kind of deluxe edition.

It is all described here

3.  A Heart of Grime record release show is happening in LA on Nov. 9th at WOMEN.  Also playing will be Charlie McAlister, which I am definitely siked about.  1852 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles. More on that TBA.

4.  The final benefit for Brian Perez is in the offing.  It's at The Smell in Los Angeles.  Playing are Debaser, Knight Rider, Voice on Tape, Mika Mika, Food Eater.   An all around enjoyable show for certain.  Make your way to it:

This is the final benefit for Brizzahh, which is taking place one day after his last sergery.

come on out and let's make this the best one yet!

5.  If you have any contacts in Tucson or Salt Lake City let me know…I am booking shows in these places and it has been difficult. SLC is Nov. 3rd. Tucson is Nov. 18th w/ I.E. and Ruth Allison.  Help is woefully needed, dude.

My big thank yous this week go to Lou and Sean, Chris, DENNIS CALLACI, Alfonso (Pancho) and Rich.

My feet are freezing.

$2 Dinner

Add to Memories Share
I'm pretty into $2 dinner right now. I go out buy the cheapest vegetables at the market - only enough to use immediately. Score some serrano chiles. Cook rice. Then throw down hardcore with the serranos in a curry or stir fry.

The resulting high is a nice addition to being really successful at being cheap as fuck.

I heard my roommates talking about spending $150 dollars to get a prescription card for marijuana, then spending $65 dollars a pop on weed at the dispensary. What morons. Any drug that costs that much is one I don't need to do...licitly.

Red Planet Records, save that bitch! I have real negative feelings about donating time and money to a place that has consistently ripped off the customer and the artist, refused to pay out on consignemnts, marked items as out of print when it was not true and now, misrepresented themselves as Riverside's "only independent record store." Por eso, this Red Planet Records benefit show seems like a collossal steaming load. And besides they are a business, not a charity. Then again, I would be far more inclined to let that slide if it was a place that really had benefited the community in any way besides giving a few awesome people jobs - they should get the benefit money, not the store itself.

Glad that is off my chest.
